Belal ibn ribah was an Ethiopian born in Mecca in the 6th century. the prophet Muhammad pbuh chose belal as his muezzin (The person chosen to lead the adhan, call to prayer. Belal was among the slaves freed by Abu Bakr and known for his beautiful voice which was demonstrated through prayers. He was one of the first inhabitants of Mecca to accept early Islam. It is said that belal was asked by the prophet himself to call the people to prayer. when people suggested that the honor or muezzin should be given to someone else (because he could pronounce only simple arabic letters), it was the prophet Muhammad who said, "The 'sin' of Belal is 'shin' in the hearing of God," meaning that God does not see the physical manifestation; he appreciates the purity of heart. In 622, the year of the Hijra, Belal also migrated to Medina and over the next decade accompanied Muhammad on all his military expeditions, serving, tradition says, as the Prophet's mace-bearer and steward, but also as a muezzin revered by Muslims for his majestically sonorous renditions of the adhan. His grave in Damascus is visited by numerous devoted Muslims every year.

Belal was born in Western Arabia. Belal's Parents came to Arabia as slaves from Ethiopia. His father and Mother Rebah and Hamama were slaves of Ummayya bin Khalaf (A non Muslim) He was a rich man from the tribe of Quraish. Belal was born into slavery and served as a housekeeper.
Belal was about 40 when Prophet Muhammad started teaching the new religion of Islam, He accepted the religion of Islam and became a Muslim.
